Gunmen Kidnaps Students in Kaduna University

Gunmen have kidnapped students in Greenfield University, Kaduna, the fifth high profile school attack in North West Nigeria since 2021.

Unknown armed men on Tuesday night grabbed the undergraduates from the University in the north western city.

The Police have confirmed the kidnap from the private higher institution in Kaduna.

Unverified reports says about 40 students were kidnapped and the security official was killed after breaking into the institution.

An anonymous Kaduna government official confirmed the incident and tells newsmen that investigations are being carried out about the incident.

“sadly but true that gunmen kidnapped some students from the greenfield University but we are still investigating about the incident.”

Two officials at the university told AFP at least 20 students were still missing though it was unclear how many had been taken by gunmen or may have fled the attack.

“There was an attack at about 20:15 (1915 GMT) last night. The suspected bandits infiltrated the university in large numbers,” local police spokesman Mohammed Jalige told AFP.

“Some students are said to have been abducted but we are yet to ascertain how many,” he added. “We have deployed our men to find the perpetrators and rescue the victims.”

This is the second time that gunmen cum kidnappers will storm tertiary institution after kidnap incident at the Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation last month.

29 students of college of forestry still remains with these kidnappers after 10 students gets freedom few days ago.

However, no group have claimed responsibility on this fresh attack at Greenfield University.

Since December 2020, some 730 students have been abducted, disrupting the studies of more than five million children, UN agency UNICEF said.
